About me
I am an experienced Sessional English tutor. I have taught IELTS, language and study skills. I am professional, conscientious, personable and reliable. I have a MA in English Literature and a CELTA (pass B) certificate. I am a trustee of the Betjeman Poetry Prize, a charity in the education sector founded in 2006 and working with partners across the United Kingdom to promote literacy, foster creativity and provide a platform for new voices from the next generation. I like reading and keeping fit in my spare time.
I have worked for two years as a Sessional English language and Study Skills tutor at a college for international students gaining a certificate required to gain undergraduate and postgraduate places at universities in the UK. Students are predominantly aged 16-21 and there are also a number of mature learners. I have taught a variety of different modules including IELTS, academic English, additional language support, academic skills and a research project for pre-masters students on Science and Engineering pathways. I am required to plan lessons that build upon a course overview and prepare students for assessments. I have been standardised to assess students oral and written work. I also provide pastoral and academic support 12 tutees. The modules I teach are often intensive and students are required to achieve a language requirement set by universities by the end of their course. My lesson objectives are therefore focused towards preparing students for their assignments and exams. This has shaped my teaching practice and has taught me the importance of motivating students by setting achievable lesson aims and linking activities to students goals. I enjoy adapting my lessons to ensure that every student is given the confidence to achieve their potential. I have also worked as a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes Tutor at Bath University. I taught language and study skills to students due to undertake science MSc degrees during an intensive summer course at the University. Last year, I helped a journalist/writer with the referencing editing of her thesis for her MPhil degree in Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies.
I am available to teach at weekends, Wednesdays from midday, Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings.
